Local Foundry Workman Killed
Sullivan Resident Dies in Italy in Defense of His Country
The War Department has advised Mr. and Mrs. Ray Friend of Sullivan of the death of their son, Cpl. George R. Friend, 28, who "was killed in action in defense of his country on Feb. 8 in Italy.
A brother-in-law of William Farner of Wellington, Cpl. Friend was employed at the Sterling Foundry at the time of his induction and was well known in this community.
he served with the coast artillery from the time he entered the service in August 1942. He was trained at a camp in Virginia and before leaving for North Africa was at Camp Stewart, GA. He left for oversaes in March 1943 and from North Africa went to Italy.
He was born at Ashland June 28, 1915, and attended school at Lodi. Prior to entering the service he worked on his parents' farm for three years, worked for five years for Earl Braden of Nankin, coming to the moulding department of the foundry here on Feb. 17, 21942, and worked there until Aug. 8.
He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Howard of Adarid, Harold, Melvin and Blen at home.
George Raymond Friend was Permilia Anna Sisson's grandson.
